A cute video showing a pig rescuing a goat that went viral last fall was actually an elaborate ad for a Comedy Central show, the network revealed on Wednesday.

The original video showed a pig at a petting zoo playing hero when he swims across a pond to save a trapped and terrified goat whose foot is stuck underwater. That video, which was picked up by Mashable, among others, has gotten more than 7 million views. Based on the ratings, few viewers smelled a rat: Only about 1,400 gave it the thumbs down vs. 30,000 likes.

On Wednesday, Comedy Central fessed up that the video was designed to promote Nathan For You, a series premiering Thursday. As the star of that show, Nathan Fielder, explains in the video above, the rescue was executed with the help of a couple of scuba divers and about 20 crew members. The show, which features Fielder trying to help small businesses, includes an upcoming episode in which he creates the video to create a buzz for a petting farm in Oak Glen, Calif.

While 7.2 million is a respectable showing, it pales next to another fake animal video — Golden Eagle Snatches Kid — which got 42 million views since December. Proceeds of that video will fund scholarships for 3-D animation students.
